Objects In The Rear View Mirror…

…are closer than they appear. If you drive you have read this; hopefully not while you were driving! The curve of the mirror distorts the image creating the appearance that it is further than it really is. While this is helpful to know when changing lanes or backing up it is even more useful when we apply the premise to our walk with Christ. When we look back, there are times in our lives that God seems so far away. Our human perception like the rear view mirror can distort how we see God. Add the lies of Satan and not only does God seem far away but the road behind seems so dark it’s as if the light of the world was nowhere to be found.

I know many of us have…

…a considerable amount of “road” in the rear view mirror and know that the object of our faith, God, is always closer than He appears. That being said, even the most experienced driver has on occasion been on a back road that is so dark that objects don’t appear in the rear view mirror or out the side windows and their headlights barely light up the path ahead. I believe that the same can be said for every follower of Christ at some point in their life. As brothers and sisters in Christ sometimes we are called upon to remind others that the object of their faith is closer than He appears.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18

It’s been a tough week, well a tough few weeks, check that, it’s been a tough few years but this week has been worse. I will share more in the future. I took this short post from an email I wrote the church I was transitioning. I really needed to hear it and as I face an uncertain future, I will need to hear it again and again. I hope it also encourages you.

  1. Thanks for this post. I had surgery two days ago and everyone is wondering what I am doing at the computer so soon afterward, but as you said, our Savior is closer than we think. Besides, it was minor surgery, as if anything is minor when they cut into you and “adjust” things. But over the past few months, I have had difficulty sitting long enough to write anything, and this latest surgery corrected that. So, I understand when the physical ailments that God allows us to have confront the calling. You are still in my prayers.

  2. I love your analogy, certainly more profound than mine. (I was just remembering a Far Side cartoon, showing the rear view mirror with the notice at the top – “Objects may be closer than they appear.” – and the reflection of a giant, bloodshot eyeball. 😆🙄)
