Application far exceeds context is a truth that is both empowering and overwhelming for any Christ follower who desires to dig deep and go beyond the logistics and historical context of the scriptures. It can be just as easy to write off a portion of scripture as only relevant to Bible time culture as it is to stretch it beyond the breaking point so that it fits the preconceived ideas we maintain are biblical truth. I was too young when I got married. At twenty-one years of age I dove in headfirst. I never thought of the consequences. I never weighed the potential for failure against the possibility of success. A church that is going nowhere is one of the most painful things to watch. Forward motion had stopped a long time ago but no one noticed. There is always enough blame to go around. By this I don’t mean everyone has a part in the problem but instead everyone is blaming someone with the hope they themselves won’t get blamed. As numbers dwindle, the push to look outside for new attendees starts; but what type of church will they end up attending? (more…)
You have a hollow leg. As far as I knew there was no empty cavity in my leg. I never bothered to ask which one, both seemed to be full of whatever it is that legs are supposed to be full of. At no time during my waking hours did I notice a change in the appearance or feeling of my leg so I was pretty sure she was wrong.

If someone tells you that you are not sorry enough, I assume your response would be similar to mine. Your face would turn red, your fingernails would dig into your palms as you made a fist and, depending on your level of self-control, the words “how dare you judge how sorry I am” would either blast from your lips or leak around your clenched teeth. No time to think, no time to reflect, no time to discuss, just enough time to defend your assertion that you are sorry with the added qualifier, “take it or leave it.” (more…)
