The Epistle of Jeremiah the Prophet to the Modern Church – Tied Up In Nots

I am concerned. I would even say I am worried but I know as followers of Christ we are often chastised when one says, “I am afraid” or “anxious” or “worried” so in an attempt to avoid the unacceptable, out of context, reality denying unbiblical response to the fear those that struggle in the face of what appears to be unsurmountable situations feel, I will stick with I am concerned. What am I concerned about? I am concerned that as a follower of Christ I will be forced to serve those who are foreign to my faith in a land that I no longer can call my own.

This is not the warning of an isolationist.

I am not an isolationist. I am not, not an isolationist. I am not trying to make a political statement. I am not, not trying to make a political statement. The contents of this blog post are not a right wing manifesto. The words in this post are not a left wing attack. This post has no wings right or left although I hope it will not, not fly. It appears that somewhere along the way my post as become so wrapped up in itself that my desire to not, not make a political statement and not, not come across as on one side or the other or not or not, not be isolationist… Never mind let me start again. I am concerned that as a follower of Christ I will be forced to serve those who are foreign to my faith in a land that I no longer can call my own.

Why am I concerned?

Because Jeremiah warned Israel that there is a punishment for forsaking God and taking on other gods. You might say, “but we’re not the Jews and we haven’t taken on foreign gods.” Forgive me for the further confusion, I will be adding to the very confusing paragraph before but, we are not, not Jews and we are not, not taking on other gods.

Please tell me you will not, not continue reading.

Those reading, for the most part, are not Jewish by lineage but those who follow Christ have been grafted in. Many of those reading consider themselves Christ followers but that does not change the human proclivity to have other gods in our lives. The biggest god of the modern church is Christianity itself. I’m not saying that being a Christian is creating a false god. I’m not, not say that being a Christian is creating a false god. I am simply saying that I am concerned that the modern church has created a false god out of Christianity. I would say I am afraid, anxious and worried but I would be accused of an incomplete faith and therefore creating a wrong version of God: a false god. Even with this possibility I am not, not saying I am afraid, anxious and worried.

Let me come straight to the point.

I say this because I have been doing anything but coming straight to the point. The adoption of the ways of the world and their integration into following Christ through many modern churches is the creation of a new Christianity which has become a false god. If your bird flies in a clockwise circle you are most likely assuming that this false god is based in the radical Marxist philosophies of your political rivals. If your bird flies counterclockwise you are most likely assuming that this false god is based in the radical fascist philosophies of your political opponents. If you just don’t understand the bird thing it’s like paddling a canoe; paddle on the left go around clockwise, paddle on the right go around counterclockwise. I was not, not trying to confuse you.

This is not, not simple, the problem is me.

When we move away from God we will be ruled by foreigners to our faith and we will live in a land not our own. The god of this world has become the god of many modern churches. What was once the domain of those who followed Christ is now being ruled by those who are foreign to orthodox Christianity. The property of the church was the morality of the people based solely on the word of God but the church itself has become immoral, worldly and its pursuit of personal freedom has replaced being truly free in Christ. Once the happiness of living in a democratic and free society becomes the point of your faith rather than a blessing that may or may not remain, we have a new god that is foreign and it rules us.

And when the people ask, ‘Why has the Lord our God done all this to us?’ you will tell them, ‘As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your own land, so now you will serve foreigners in a land not your own.’ Jeremiah 5:19 (NIV)

This post is not the exact application of Jeremiah 5:19. This post is not, not an application of Jeremiah 5:19
